Deacons:  The Best Kept Secret in the Episcopal Church

Featuring

Rev. Dr. Joanne Leslie,
Archdeacon of the

Diocese of Los Angeles

Sunday, October 23, 2016
Sweetland Hall
12:30-2:30

What is a Deacon in the Episcopal church?  Who is a Deacon, and what do they do?  And, what is an Archdeacon

Join the Women's Community for a simple lunch of rice and beans, as the Rev. Dr. Joanne leslie clears up the mystery and answers all of your quetions.  In 2011, Joanne was appointed the first female Archdeacon in the episcopal diocese of Los Angeles following a lengthy career in international public health.

As a deacon in Los Angeles, she worked with urban churche to establish innovative nutrition and fitness programs and taught at UCLA's School of Public Health.  "My work in public health was a ministry long before I recognized it as such," she says.

Joanne will share her experience with maternal and child malnutrition issues in sub-Saharan Africa and efforts to reduce health inequalities in underserved communities of Los Angeles.  In addition, she will share her vision of the critical role  that deacons play in the contemporary church, and we will hear about the incredible breadth of ministries of the fifty deacons who currently serve our diocese.   She will clarify how the call to be a deacon is different than the call to the priesthood and to lay leadership.

This progam is open to all.  $15.00 entrance fee is payable at the door and includes lunch and program.  All profits from this program will be donated to Community Health Councils, (CHC)  of Los Angeles.  You can
