MAC 2021 Webinar Series: Identifying Need for Spay/Neuter Services in MA: A GIS-based Analysis

Monday, April 19, 2021 at 5pm

Lecture Overview

About the meeting:  Please join us for a presentation about a method for assessing need for spay and neuter resources using GIS (Geographic Information Systems).

Introduction:  A needs assessment for spay and neuter resources in Massachusetts.

Cameron Carow will present the results of a GIS-based analysis of need for spay and neuter resources in the state of Massachusetts. This project demonstrates how GIS can be utilized to combine spatial, socioeconomic and demographic data to identify regions with significant need for spay and neuter resources. This analysis was designed to support MAC as it reassesses the “I am Animal Friendly” License Plate Grant program.  This will help MAC members and friends understand how these findings reflect what is happening in your part of Massachusetts and it will provide us with the information that we all need in order to refine our own spay and neuter efforts.

Speaker Information

As a DVM/MPH candidate for 2021 at Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University, Cameron Carow has focused his time on subjects related to public health. He spent his first summer in veterinary school working on antimicrobial resistance (AMR), including monitoring and analyzing antimicrobial use on poultry farms in Bangladesh and learning about legislative efforts to address AMR. He returned to Bangladesh a second year to conduct rabies surveillance and evaluate local community and government responses to suspected rabid animals.

Prior to veterinary school, Cameron took every opportunity he could to travel and gain new experiences. He served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in China, teaching English at a university in southern Sichuan province. He loves the outdoors and has also held jobs building hiking trails and working as a sawyer in Colorado. While an undergraduate student he traveled to Taiwan, working in a charity veterinary clinic providing free emergency medical care in addition to spay and neuter services. Cameron is looking forward to graduating this May and the next step in his career.
