"Communicating Mindfully"

Course Objectives:

Training in Communicating Mindfully combines the study of mindfulness, communication theory, and emotional intelligence, which have been shown to develop skills that are vital to the success of dental offices:

  • Focused attention
  • Reliable working memory
  • Emotion regulation
  • Reduced stress

Patients put their trust in dental professionals. Not only do they expect diagnoses to be correct, but they expect the professionals who are scraping, poking, prodding, and drilling their teeth to be focused and skillful in their performance. In order for dental professionals to fulfill those expectations, they need more than to top-notch dental care training. They also need a workplace environment that allows them to thrive. Perhaps the biggest factor in establishing such an environment are the interpersonal relationships that are fostered within the dental team.

Team members need to feel valued and respected in order to perform to the best of their ability. Without those fundamental interpersonal pillars, there is bound to be tension and discomfort, both of which can interfere not only with the exchange of vital diagnostic and treatment information, but also with one’s ability to perform tasks effectively. It is difficult, for instance, to maintain sustained focused attention when distracted by thoughts or emotions from recent unpleasant interactions. Even fine motor skills can be compromised when one feels stressed or agitated. For these reasons and more, the study of mindful communication can help dental offices improve performance, while also reducing stress and increasing job satisfaction.

During this introductory workshop, participants will

  • Recognize the contextual nature of effective communication
  • Identify personal and interpersonal communication challenges
  • Learn the foundations of Communicating Mindfully
  • Explore the benefits of mindful communication
  • Practice mindfulness meditation
  • Set intentions for applying mindful communication to their lives
  • Discuss how mindful communication can lead to increased happiness
