Periodontal Instrumentation: How Not to Overwork Your Hands

This three-hour course is based on the research presented in the article, “Periodontal Instrumentation: How Not  to Overwork Your Hands”  published in the May 2014 Issue of RDH Magazine. The course presenter, Cynthia Biron Leiseca, is the author of the article and she will present sound ergonomic techniques for effectively accessing and removing deep calculus deposits using facilitated fulcrums and strategic leverage. The course has helped hundreds of dental hygienists work smarter and more effectively while utilizing the best ergonomics and providing patient-centered care to periodontal patients.

Course objectives:

At the completion of the course the participant will be able to:

  • Name the type and causes of repetitive strain injuries common to dental hygienists.
  • Recognize signs and symptoms of predisposing factors for hand injuries.
  • Perform exercises that strengthen hands and improve flexibility.
  • Describe the patient operator positioning that provides the best leverage for periodontal instrumentation.
  • Describe the physics involved in precision in placement of the instrument so less clinician effort is required to perform the working stroke.
  • Describe the importance of the advanced fulcrum finger grasp.
  • Correlate handle placement and clock position for minimal effort with more control of lateral pressure.
  • Demonstrate the facilitated fulcrum placement for reduction in pinch stress and improved parallelism for access to the base of deep pockets.
  • Demonstrate the method for separating calculus deposits from the tooth surface while preventing loss of cementum.

Handouts will be sent via e-Mail for this course.

The course tuition will include the DVD video “A Focus on Fulcrums” that includes demonstrations of all the techniques presented in the course.  This DVD has been included as part of the “Periodontal Instrumentation Camps” that have been provided for clinical dental hygiene faculty from various dental hygiene programs nationally and internationally.
