Diabetes and Obesity 

The Growing Impact on General and Oral Health

Carol Jahn RDH, MS

Carol Jahn, RDH, MS has a BS in dental hygiene from the University of Iowa and an MS in Continuing Education from the University of St Francis. She has been a dental hygienist since 1982; she practiced clinically for 14 years in general and periodontal practices. Currently, she is Senior Professional Relations Manager for Water Pik, Inc. She has published more than 75 papers and contributed to 7 textbooks including the 10th and 11th editions of Clinical Periodontology. She is a past president of the Illinois Dental Hygienists’ Association and past Treasurer of the ADHA, and a 2013 recipient of the ADHA/Johnson & Johnson Award of Excellence.

This course was designed and developed by Carol A Jahn, RDH, MS, a Water Pik employee.  Water Pik manufacturers and distributes products mentioned in this course.

Course objective:  Provide the participant with the tools to effectively assess, manage,and treat individuals with diabetes; particularly those with concurrent obesity.

Course description: This course is designed to provide practitioners with the tools to play a key role in achieving successful outcomes with individuals who have diabetes or are at-risk for diabetes. The role of obesity and its oral health implications will be reviewed.

  • Oral health manifestations
  • Emergency protocols
  • Periodontal therapy
  • Self-care recommendations

  • Identify risk factors and implement findings in oral and general health assessments
  • Discuss the health-related complications and consequences of diabetes and obesity
  • Appraise the research and evaluate the relationship between periodontal disease, obesity, and diabetes
  • Locate sound resources that can be used in daily clinical practice
  • Recommend appropriate self-care products and techniques
