EDAS Covid Conversations #8

This is our eighth EDAS Covid Conversation; an opportunity for Scotland's economic development community to share different perspectives on the pandemic and in particular share experience and ideas for policy and practice. Catch up on our Covid Conversations #1-7 at our Wakelet event blog page.

If nothing else, the pandemic has forced many of our public, private and voluntary organisations across all sectors, to innovate to survive and to deliver vital services. ‘Homeworking, Zoom, Pivot, Virtual Town Marketplace’ – the vocabulary of the new norm.

Radical incrementalism is opening minds, opportunities and global partnerships. But what of the bigger picture, the really bold steps required to address the scale of the recession and rising unemployment? The Scottish Government’s recent review looked at how Scotland's technology sector can contribute to the country's economic recovery after the COVID-19.

In this last of our Covid Conversations, we discuss Innovation for Recovery.

EDAS Deputy Chair, Charlie Woods, Director, Scottish Universities Insight Institute, is joined by Adam Lang, Head of Nesta in Scotland discussing new solutions for a fairer, healthier, more sustainable future.  David McIntosh, Associate Director, Scottish Futures Trust will discuss how the pandemic has expedited innovation in Scotland and what will be achieved with the £1.5 billion earmarked for new innovation centres and districts.  Barbara Mills, Programme Manager, CivTech, will highlight private-public collaborations, and how CivTech is “driving daring and innovation in the public sector”.
