Post Event Workshop - Trauma Sensitive  Mindfulness
Sunday, December 8, 2019 - 12:30 - 4:00 pm
 at Barry University
Workshop synergistically addresses three important trends in education today: mindfulness, the ubiquity of chronic stress/trauma challenges in the classroom, and compassion. A growing knowledge base regarding the effects of chronic stress and trauma on the developing child is now just beginning to be applied to help students in educational settings. At the same time, research has clearly demonstrated how supportive relationships with caring adults can help troubled children and teens recover and thrive so they can complete school and become successful members of our society. Concurrently, there is a trend in education today to cultivate greater compassion in school environments to build the resilience and social support these children and teens need. While many professional learning programs aim to help teachers understand and support such students, none present the skills required for developing and sustaining the compassion required to help them. Research shows that mindful awareness and compassion practices promote the cognitive and emotional strengths we need to build and maintain resilience. Dr. Jennings will introduce this research and present simple, easy to use mindfulness, compassion and emotion skills proven to enhance resilience and promote well-being.
