Webconferenced Course (no face to face meetings):  Students participate from their home computers. If students near Syracuse want to gather at the NY Conference Office, Rev. David Cleaver-Bartholomew will offer most Sunday sessions from there, connecting via Webex to students at a distance.

Instructor

The Rev. David Cleaver-Bartholomew, Ph.D, has recently served as interim minister for First English Lutheran Church of Syracuse.  A UCC minister, he is a graduate of Yale Divinity School and received his Ph.D. in Hebrew Scriptures and Early Judaism from Claremont Graduate University.  He teaches Old Testament I and II for the New York School of Ministry.

Old Testament I

Instructor: Rev. David Cleaver-Bartholomew, Ph.D.

Webconferenced Course: No Face to Face Meetings Required

Students can participate in each class from their home computers. They will be expected to have webcams (which can be purchased for $30 at stores like Target). Students who want to travel to Syracuse (weather permitting)  can participate in most Sunday sessions from the NY Conference Office.

During this course we will: 1) study critically many of the documents of the Old Testament (e.g., Genesis through Esther) paying particular attention to their historical context; 2) examine the relevance of the Old Testament for the Christian church; and 3) discuss the role/use of the Old Testament in (our) faith development.

Sundays: September 27, October 4, 18 & 25, November 1, 8 & 15 (6:30pm - 8:30pm) Wednesdays: September 30, October 7, & 21, November 4, 11 & 18 (7-8pm)

NY Conference Students:  For Credit $250; Audit $175; Repeat Course Audit $100

Students outside the NY Conference: For Credit $275(plus Distance Learning Support Fee);   Audit $200 (plus Distance Learning Support Fee)

Distance Learning requires technological support.  The NY Conference provides that support for its students; we ask other UCC Conferences and participating denominations to provide that support for their students ($69 per course or $133 per semester).  When students outside the NY Conference register, we recommend that they ask their UCC Conferences or denominations to contribute the distance learning support fee (payment can be made at www.uccny.org: click on donate button and specify "DLSF" with student's name on the NYSOM line). If no wider church support is available, the Distance Learning Support Fee is the student's responsibility.

Registration Deadline:  September 10, 2015
