The  Center for Autism Research (CAR) is a collaborative research center between The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and the University of Pennsylvania. CAR's primary mission is to understand the causes of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and develop effective treatments through research with infants through adults. Families who participate receive comprehensive assessment reports and are paid for their time and some travel expenses. CAR is also committed to serving the needs of families living with ASD through education and guidance. The new CAR Autism Roadmap seeks to help families answer questions about life with autism, whether they are new to the diagnosis or have lived with it for years, as well as connect them with resources in their communities via the CAR Resource Directory.

Next Steps into Adulthood Workshop and Resource Fair

-A Workshop for Young Adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and the Parents/Caregivers/Professionals who support them-

The transition from adolescence into adulthood can be an exciting, yet daunting time for young adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and their families. Preparing for adulthood may involve entering a new environment, graduating from school, handling different social situations and responsibilities, and accepting changes in a comfortable routine.

CAR is presenting a half-day workshop, followed by a resource fair for individuals with autism and their families.  This workshop will be focused on supporting individuals who are expecting to access services through the adult system and may require on-going supports to reach their goals. Presenters will share ideas, resources, and tools covering topics such as navigating the waiver system, financial planning, future living arrangements and promoting self-advocacy and independence. A resource fair will be held directly following the workshop sessions, introducing families to several of the adult provider options.

 

There will be two tracks: one for family members/providers & one for young adults with ASD.

  • Young adults are welcome to come with a support person, as needed
  • Presentations will focus on planning for the future, promoting independence and making the transition to adult funding and services
  • Young adults will participate in small-group discussions and activities related to navigating ASD as an adult.
  • There will be a resource fair with information from support organizations & service providers.

Cost*:  All prices include resources, continental breakfast and beverages

  • $10 for young adults, parents and caregivers - $5 additional for a TSS or other support person
  • $25 for a family of three or more
  • $15 for a professional without continuing education - $10 additional for participants requesting CEUs

*Lunch is not included, although there will be a continental breakfast with beverages in the morning

*Price does not include parking, which is available in the visitor’s lot at a reduced rate.
