Place, Space, and the Digital Divide: Rural Youth Accessing the Internet with Mobile Phones
Dr. Julie Warner |  Department of Writing and Linguistics

Warner's lecture utilizes images to convey the impact of the digital divide – the gap between those with and without Internet access.

The digital divide has been discussed at length, particularly in regard to rural places. This study focused on the digital composing practices of three rurally-located adolescents who accessed the Internet primarily by way of mobile phone-based Internet access.

Warner's Great Minds lecture highlights a study she conducted using an approach to space as connection to understand the use of technology by the participants across spaces. The findings emphasize a need to consider technologies in use and the nature and legibility of online spaces for youth.

Dr. Julie Warner

Warner is an assistant professor of writing and linguistics at Georgia Southern University. A former high school English teacher, her research focuses on technologies and the writing practices of adolescents.
