Ray Bottenberg, Oregon Department of Transportation
Ray Bottenberg, P.E., S.E. is the Bridge Preservation Managing Engineer leading ODOT’s Bridge Preservation Engineering Team. A 1986 mechanical engineering graduate of Oregon State University, Ray worked as an aircraft structures engineer for The Boeing Company in Seattle, Washington from 1986 to 1997 and worked as a project manager/engineer for a commercial/industrial heating, ventilating, and air conditioning contractor before joining ODOT in 1999. In his personal time he has authored several regional history books on bridges and dams, and enjoys spending time with his wife Jeanna and their 16-year-old son Ian.
Arne Johnson, Wiss, Janney, Elstner Associates, Inc.
Arne Johnson is Principal with over 30 years of experience at Wiss, Janney, Elstner Associates, Inc. in Northbrook, Illinois. He is a licensed professional and structural engineer in numerous states and holds a BS in Civil Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (1987) and an MS in Structural Engineering from the University of California at Berkeley (1988). Mr. Johnson’s areas of practice include structural evaluation, testing, and rehabilitation design for structures of all types, including historic bridges, stadiums, and museums. He has particular expertise assessing and developing repairs to extend the life of historic concrete structures. Recent historic concrete rehabilitation projects include the Franklin Avenue Bridge and 3rd Avenue Bridge in Minneapolis and ongoing work at Soldier Field Stadium in Chicago.
Patrick Sparks, Sparks Engineering, Inc.
Patrick Sparks is President of Sparks Engineering, Inc., a consulting firm specializing in the investigation and rehabilitation of historic structures. Sparks is an expert member of ISCARSAH, an international scientific committee on structural conservation and he serves on the advisory board of the Concrete Preservation Institute. Sparks also served as President of the Historic Bridge Foundation from 2003-2007. Some of his projects include: structural QA/QC for the relocation of the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, stabilization of 18th century churches in the San Antonio Missions World Heritage Site, the rehabilitation of the historic Rio de Manatí bridge in Puerto Rico, and conservation of WWII concrete structures on Peleliu Island, Republic of Palau. His current bridge project is the rehabilitation of the 1869/1914 Suspension Bridge over the Brazos River in Waco, Texas.
David Whitmore, Vector Corrosion Technologies
David Whitmore is President and Chief Innovation Officer for Vector Corrosion Technologies, a company which specializes in the repair and corrosion protection of reinforced concrete structures. Dave is a registered Professional Engineer and is a fellow of the American Concrete Institute, the International Concrete Repair Institute and the Canadian Society of Civil Engineers. He serves on a number of repair, corrosion, sustainability and education committees of ACI, ICRI and NACE. He has been involved with US Federal Highway Administration on the Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP and SHRP 2 projects) with regard to Electrochemical Chloride Extraction, Cathodic Protection of concrete bridge structures and Bridges for Service Life Beyond 100 Years.
