Documentation Technologies Workshop 

The Platform for Condition Analysis and
the Basis for Preservation Project Planning

In rehabilitating important existing structures, it is crucial to begin by fully and accurately gathering data on geometry and current conditions. Documentation data form the platform for condition analysis and the basis for engineers and architects to design and implement through execution and final construction.

Participants in this workshop will learn about the latest technologies for obtaining the information and data critical for project planning, analysis, and diagnostics, as well as how to assemble an effective data gathering strategy to fit differing project needs.

9:30 - 10:30 am             Architect's Case Study
Application of the traditional project management triangle (time-cost-quality) as it relates to the selection and implementation of various technologies will be discussed. The presenter will review the use of technologies at various phases of a project, as well as the use of multiple technologies together and their integration and degree of implementation. The application of technologies at different scales of projects also will be examined, using micro/macro comparisons – of both project size and level of detail required.  Brandon Friske, Quinn Evans Architects

10:45 - 11:30 am           Measuring Complicated Buildings – An Overview, History and Current Situation

11:30 am – 12:15 pm  Hygrothermal and Energy Concepts
Building physics background, benefits, and limitations for implementing hygrothermal modeling and analysis to existing buildings will be covered. Usage of whole building air leakage equipment, infrared thermography, and window air leakage testing in a holistic energy performance evaluation will be discussed.  Gordon Shepperd, Apollo BBC

1:30 - 2:15 pm               Current Technology – Laser Scanning and NDE Tools 
Current available technologies in the world of laser scanning and their applications in the field will be presented. Case studies will showcase the pros and cons of the different technologies – and their appropriateness given existing materials and project objectives.

3:15 - 4:00 pm              Portable X-Ray Fluorescence:  Capabilities, Limitations, Applications
The goal of this presentation is to introduce XRF analysis, how it works, and the history of uses. Options in the field for using portable XRF on various materials will be discussed. Technology’s application to existing buildings, systems of documentation, and a proposed protocol for on-site testing will be presented.  Natalie Feinberg Lopez, Built Environment Evolution

4:00 - 4:30 pm             Photogrammetry: Current Trends
Current trends in the photogrammetry field of technology will be examined.  Similarly to other technologies, photogrammetry has certain capabilities and limitations. The “success” of its use depends on the project’s objectives.  Dennis Hirota and Chris Gray

Workshop attendees are encouraged to engage in a discussion of current projects, lessons learned from current and past projects, challenges with documentation technologies, and other pertinent topics.

1:30 - 4:30 pm              Afternoon Tour of Doris Duke’s Home, Shangri La - OPTIONAL
Workshop attendees are being offered a special "Behind the Scenes" tour of Doris Duke's "Shangri La" residence and museum. The site is typically closed to the public in the month of September, but APT has been able to set up a private tour experience! This unique tour will be augmented by discussions with Shangri La Lead Conservator, Kent Severson, and local Hawaiian preservation architecture firm, Mason Architects - who were involved in recent preservation and conservation efforts. Space is limited to 25 people on a first-come/first-serve basis.  Nominal fee ($25) to include the tour as well as transportation to and from the site.
