Ouch! That Stereotype Hurts
Communicating Respectfully in a Diverse World 

This interactive workshop is based on the book by Leslie C.Aguilar and will demonstrate how just one person speaking up can inspire others to do the same.  Participates will learn 6 specific techniques on how to deal with situations that can be awkward and damaging around the use of stereotypical and biased communication.  Applicable to both the workplace and one’s personal life, this workshop offers participants the understanding and skills needed to deal with our increasingly diverse world by promoting communication skills that promote inclusion and respect.  

Participants Will:

  • Understand the impact of stereotypes and biased statements, even when casually said.
  • Identify the most common reasons people sit silent in the face of bias and stereotypes.
  • Enhance skills for speaking up against stereotypes without blame or guilt.
  • Understand the high cost of Silent Collusion.
  • Explore the poser of the Bystander to make a difference.
  • Enhance skills necessary to become an effective Ally.

CEUs: 3.0 Social Work CEUs (meeting ethics requirements) are provided by the Butler County Educational Service Center awarded by the Ohio Counselor, Social Worker and MFT Boards Approvals RSX050901. 3.0 Contact Hours for Educators
