Turning Adversity Into Action

Grit.  Fortitude.  Determination.  Resilience.  No matter what you call it, teachers and administrators nationwide agree that there has never been a greater need to teach our students how to thrive in school and in life.  Studies have shown that students who score higher on resilience measures have improved social skills, higher grades, a greater love of learning, and better decision-making skills.  This lively and interactive training brings to life resilience from neuroscience to intervention.  Setting power struggles aside, we will explore how the brain heals itself and identify everyday, brain-based tools to help students of all ages and ability levels develop the desire to try and the resilience to keep moving forward.  We will look at what you already are doing and share even more tools for turning adversity into action for all of us.

The breakthrough idea Christian will be presenting is that resilience can be taught.  In fact, it’s something we are all born with – from the homeless person on the street to the brightest Harvard professor.  Most of us – including many of our schools’ most struggling students – just haven’t learned how to access what’s already inside.  In this presentation, participants will learn about the vital skills of resilience found in WhyTry Founder Christian Moore’s book, “The Resilience Breakthrough:  27 Tools for Turning Adversity into Action.” This engaging presentation will empower participants to deliver these skills to students of any background and learning style.

Sarah and Mary will explore practical approaches to support youth in developing the resilience they need to try and the regulation they need to keep moving forward even in the most challenging circumstances.  They will explain the neuroscience behind Christian Moore’s WhyTry Approach and connect those explanations to practical ways teachers, parents, practitioners, ordinary citizens can be with youth as they move along their resilience journey.

Learning Outcomes:

  1. Participants will recognize and know how to utilize the resources for resilience that exist around them.
  2. Participants will be able to cite 10 specific tools that will help build resilience in youth.
  3. Participants will be able to apply practical interventions that will help them be with youth as they identify the hidden resilience in their survival skills.
  4. Participants will be able to help students uncover and develop their hidden resilience into skills they can use to move beyond their circumstances and create the future they want.
