Your Trainer:

Dan Elliot is the Cooperative Communication Specialist. He provides people with insight and strategies for understanding themselves and others as a way of communicating more clearly, improving relationships, and maintaining safety on the job. Cooperative Communication is a method professionals can use to be safer and more productive in the commison of their work. It employs techniques that tend to encourage people to work together towards the same end: gain deeper understanding that we may get along better, connect more deeply, be more productive, and achieve better results and outcomes. See his website for more information.

Fix your Face, Fix your Voice:
Changing How We Communicate When Under Stress

Communicating is challenging enough. Being under stress when communicating increases the challenge. It affects how messages are sent and how they’re received and can have a negative affect on those we’re talking with. The issue is you cannot not tell your story. Whatever is going on on the inside, will be reflected on the outside. Your body gives “tells” through posture, voice quality—even word choice. Controlling one’s tone and facial expression while under stress is important and best accomplished through controlling what one thinks and feels. When we are able to change what’s going for us on the inside, it will be reflected on what others see on the outside. The first part of this workshop will cover recognizing the early warning signs of being under stress. Next, methods that promote self-calming through body language, breathing techniques, word choice and perceptions will be introduced.

Participants will be able to:

  • Recognize the early warning signs of when they’re under stress.
  • Use body posture, breathing techniques, word choice, that promote calming.
  • Change their perceptions to change how they express themselves while under stress.
