Join us on December 3rd for the 24th Annual Orthopedic & Sports Medicine Update 

 Chronic Musculoskeletal Pain

The Slocum Research & Education Foundation in joint providership with Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU), is pleased to host the 24th Annual Orthopedic & Sports Medicine Update on December 3, 2016, from 8:00a - 12:00p at the Slocum Center for Orthopedics & Sports Medicine in Eugene, Oregon. Primary care providers and allied health professionals are encouraged to attend.

  Course objectives:

  • Articulate modifiable contributors to chronic musculoskeletal pain
  • Develop or refine skills in performing orthopedic exams of the upper and lower extremities
  • Identify indications for chronic pain referrals to orthopedic specialists
  • Summarize alternatives to opioid use for managing chronic pain

Modifiable contributors to chronic musculoskeletal pain & impact of opioid misuse, abuse and overdose

 Select four total rotations from the two focus areas, Exams or Alternative Treatment Modalities; 30 minute rotations through each session of choice. Case examples, live models and/or live imaging demonstrations included.

Fundamentals of musculoskeletal exams: (1) Hand and Wrist, (2) Shoulder, (3) Knee, (4) Foot and Ankle. Slocum Faculty: Drs. Heather Campion, Jeffrey Tuman, Brick Lantz, & Lyle Jackson

Alternative modalities for chronic pain: (1) Stetching, core strength, posture & breathing; Slocum Faculty, Julie Embree, and (2) East meets West: Evidence-based complementary approaches; Faculty: Alicia Derby, DAOM, LAc.

11:00 - 12:00     Panel Presentation & Discussion

Indications for Orthopedic Referral and Surgery  Case series presentation with a multidisciplinary panel. Identification of cases in need of referral to orthopedics and surgical procedures typically prescribed opioids for post-operative pain control. Interactive Q & A is encouraged. Case presentations: (1) Knee pain, (2) Foot/Ankle Pain, (3) Hip versus Back Pain.
