Amie Martin is an Occupational Therapist with twenty years of experience serving in long term care leadership and as a clinical program specialist. She is certified in healthcare compliance, and has successfully partnered with providers to improve clinical outcomes, compliance programs, medical record documentation, and to reduce error rates under medical review. Amie’s recent publications include articles for the American Occupational Therapy Association, American Association of Nurse Assessment Coordination, American College of Health Care Administrators, and the American Health Lawyers Association.

Shelly Maffia is a Registered Nurse and Nursing Home Administrator with over ten years of experience serving in long term care leadership and consulting positions, including positions as Director of Nursing, Administrator, and Corporate Nurse Consultant and Training Positions. She earned the QAPI Certified Professional (QCP) credential from the American Association of Nurse Assessment Coordination (AANAC), which was established to promote the highest standards for QAPI program implementation in the long-term care profession.

Abuse Prevention & Reporting

Course Description:

This session covers an overview of elder abuse prevention in SNF/NF settings and the Elder Justice Act, including updated Requirements of Participation (RoP). Emphasis is on the application of facility best practices and QAPI programming to reduce the risk of abuse incidents and to ensure compliance.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the importance of thoroughly investigating and reporting allegations of abuse and neglect
  • Understand trends related to abuse and neglect citations
  • Understand how to consistently report and investigate allegations of abuse and neglect
  • Participants will understand all aspects of the Elder Justice Act including reporting requirements, anti-retaliation protections for those reporting , and potential penalties for covered individuals non-compliance
  • Identify tools for the leadership team to use for monitoring data related to reports of abuse and neglect
  • Learn strategies for incorporating abuse and neglect prevention into facility QAPI processes
