"A Conversation with Katie Hill"
Please join us to celebrate International Women’s Day and feminist politics everywhere!
Katie Hill announced her candidacy when she was 29 years old, working at a homeless services nonprofit organization. At the time, Hill was a complete unknown, a young bisexual woman with no political background or experience, no wealth, no Ivy League degree, trying to flip California's 25th congressional district which had been held by Republicans for over two decades. Hill was driven to run for office by the results of the 2016 presidential election. Countless people across the country witnessed the moment she announced because Vice News captured it as part of a documentary series called "She's Running."
Almost one year to the minute after Republican Steve Knight called her to concede the race, Hill resigned after intimate photos were published by a conservative political site and a British tabloid. In the world of social media - where political lives are shaped by Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, and Twitter - there are few controls or regulations on what some call electronic assault, digital exploitation or in this case, "revenge porn."
