Course description: Over the past decades the rates of anxiety and mood disorders have increased steadily, especially among children and adolescents. What are the preventable causes of anxiety and depression?  What has eroded our natural ability to bounce back from adversity?  And what can be done to regain resilience in childhood and sustain it throughout a lifetime?

As integrative and holistic physicians, Drs. Emmons and Culbert will take a broad and refreshing look at these questions.  Blending integrative approaches and mind/body skills with western medicine, we will describe the resilience model, natural therapies, a judicious role for medication and a systematic approach to using skills, not pills, as the foundation of good mental health. We will discuss the core factors in resilience, their scientific basis, and how they can help one achieve greater vitality, equanimity, openness and connection.

Course Objectives:

  1. Differentiate and cite specific conventional, complementary and integrative assessment and treatment approaches to mental health
  2. Recognize and explain key concepts related to the cultivation of resilience across the lifespan
  3. Describe preventable causes of the most common mental health conditions
  4. Identify and understand safe, evidence-based, non-pharmacological, natural treatment alternatives for anxiety, depression and ADHD, that support recovery, repair and re-balancing of the mind and body
  5. Plan and recommend at least three simple changes to create a healthier brain for yourself, your children, or your clients
  6. Organize, integrate and sequence natural/holistic strategies as part of an overall mental health treatment plan
  7. Select, discuss and coordinate mind-body skills including mindfulness meditation, biofeedback and breath work in the context of self-care and patient care.
