The 1994 Marrakesh Agreement established the World Trade Organization, which then began operating as such in January 1995. In that sense, the WTO was born in Africa. Now at the end of the WTO's 21st year, WTO members are about to have their first ministerial meeting in Africa. The 10th Ministerial Conference will be held in Nairobi, Kenya, from December 15 through 18, with Kenya's Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Amina Mohamed, in the chair.
This next GBD event will look at some of the issues the ministers will consider, including the welcoming of new members, the implementation of the Trade Facilitation Agreement and other elements of the Bali package, the status of major plurilateral negotiations, development, and the future of WTO negotiations against the background of Doha's unresolved issues.
