Yes, Juliet , this cheese by any other name would taste as sweet. But would it sell as well? That is the question. It is is the question at the heart of the EU's drive to persuade its trading partners to accept the EU system of geographical indications or GIs and the exclusive commercial advantages that system conveys. GIs are an issue in the EU's trade agreements, in TPP, and they will be an issue in the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership. They are also complicating plans for revising the Lisbon Agreement, which deals with systems for registering appellations of origin.
