Dig It:
Archaeology Camp
(3rd-6th)
At some point in your life, you wanted to be an archaeologist. You most probably had just seen Indiana Jones for the first time. Since the days of Heinrich Schliemann, Arthur Evans and Howard Carter, archeology has been a dream job for many people.ASU’s Continuing Education and Community Outreach knows that, so they’ve teamed up with faculty and staff from the Center for Digital Initiatives, Parkin Archaeological State Park and The Nature Center to organize an archeology camp for 20 children for one week at ASU this summer. During the week-long camp, kids will get the chance to participate in a real archaeological dig led by archaeologists and archaeology in a three dimensional virtual environment. Study of field methods include surveying, GPS and GIS mapping, excavations and artifact analysis. New, innovative techniques, which allow us to investigate ancient cultures through hands-on virtual recreations is the newest addition to the program. The curriculum includes a crash-course in the archaeological process, as well as hikes from the sites to related locations, a visit to the Crowley’s Ridge Nature Center and daily lessons from professionals ranging from general historic preservation to mapping techniques. Most thrilling will certainly be when we don our whips and fedora’s and begin traversing obstacles in search of the lost Jumping Joe relic in true Indiana Jones fashion.
