Positive peer relationships are important for a preadolescent's/adolescent's social development, ego development, and identity formation. For children with a history of selective mutism and/or social anxiety, or other anxieties, socializing with peers can be challenging, especially in a culture where more quiet personalities are often misunderstood.
This group will be geared to pre-teens/teens with a social anxiety or a history of anxiety, including selective mutism. The group will focus on education about anxiety, fight/flight/fear response, perspective taking, building social relationships, and reflection/identity formation, tying in education about healthy vs unhealthy social media use.
Participants will have the opportunity to reflect and share in discussion with the group within a safe context of peers who are also feeling vulnerable. Therapuetic scaffolding will be provided for those who need additional assistance with communicating verbally.
