Steve Day is a professional engineer with a bachelors of science degree in mechanical engineering from Northeastern University and a bachelors of science degree in electrical engineering technology from the University of Maine. Mr. Day has over 30 years of experience in the design and forensic analysis of electro-mechanical and industrial systems. He was a lead electrical controls engineer at a medium-size consulting engineering firm in the power industry and the lead sustaining forensic engineer at a chiller OEM facility.  Mr. Day has been the lead forensic engineer at Nefco Fire Investigations since 2014.  He has investigated hundreds of fires including but not limited to fires due to failure in appliances, residential, commercial and industrial building wiring systems, service entrance and utility-related electrical equipment and systems, vehicle and marine vessel components,  HVAC system and components and photovoltaics.  In 2017 Mr. Day received a New Hampshire Business Scholars award for his work teaching forensics at the high school level and he has also presented an electrical appliance failure investigation module with report writing and mock trials at the Rhode Island Chapter IAAI. He is a member of IEEE, NFPA, NAFI, IAAI, and ASHRAE. He is also a former president of the Wolfeboro, NH Energy Committee and a past president of the Maine Association of Engineers.

Electrical Fire Forensics:

In this one-day class Mr. Day will present basic electrical power and control principles, including residential power devices and their modes of failure, utility open neutral-related fires and symptoms, and common appliance failures. He will cover the four major components of appliances; power cords, controls, mechanicals and structural, as well as recognizing and differentiating parallel and series arcing on stranded and solid copper conductors, and electrical resistance heating indications.   The class will include hands-on appliance disassembly demonstrations, videos, NFPA-921 discussion, and investigation case histories
