CalAPA has just the answer -- one of our most popular events, the annual "Day at the Races" at beautiful Del Mar Race Track in Del Mar, Calif. The event will take place on Saturday, July 21. It's a classy way for you to invest in the most important relationships in your life. And who knows? You just might see the next superstar horse in the making. The 2014 Kentucky Derby winner, California Chrome, raced at Del Mar prior to his legendary run for the roses.
horseracing season at the seaside track, which is celebrating its 80th anniversary. The "Star Fiddle Skyroom" boasts panoramic views from a private balcony close to the finish line, with its own betting windows, access to grounds, a fabulous lunch buffet, snacks and a no-host bar. The event is family-friendly.The suite will be open at noon. The first race is at 2 p.m., and runs until about 6 p.m.
Tickets are just $114 per person and must be purchased by July 10. Tickets will be mailed in advance to the person who places the order. Tickets purchased after July 10 will incur additional shipping fees.
The Del Mar Race Track is located on the beach in northern San Diego County, just off Interstate 5. The train is a popular way to travel to the event. Both Amtrak and Coaster (local commuter) trains stop at the nearby Solana Beach station. Del Mar provides a free shuttle (double-decker buses) to and from the track. In 2014, the CalAPA-sponsored race was won by a 2-year -old, Lord Nelson, trained by Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert, who was photographed in the winner's circle with CalAPA representatives Holly Mendell and John Michaik from California Commercial Asphalt (In the photo to the right, Baffert is standing to the left at the CalAPA-sponsored race). Baffert went on to be the trainer of 2015 Triple Crown champion, American Pharoah (pictured above right at Del Mar in 2014 with Triple Crown jockey Victor Espinosa aboard). Baffert has also trained this year's turf sensation, Triple Crown winner Justify, an undefeated chesnut colt that also trained and raced in California.
