Join us for this online book study course to deepen your knowledge, get familiar with available resources, and find ways to incorporate Indian Education for All into your instruction. This study focuses on the topic of Indian Boarding Schools. Earn 30 renewal units for completing the required reading and course assignments *at your own pace*.

About the Book: Away from Home: American Indian Boarding School Experiences, Brenda J. Child, and K. Tsianina Lomawama

From the 1870’s through the present day Indian children of all ages have entered federal boarding schools.  Students came from many diverse tribes and reservations.  The government’s justification and rationalization for this action were to do the following:

• To “settle” the land

• Term “Kill the Indian and save the man.”

• Settlers moved west “Indians remained a problem.”

• Indians had to be moved out of the way.

About the Course:

Join us on this heart-wrenching journey where Indian children were either taken from their homes against their will or entered the federal boarding school community to obtain an education not available at their reservation. In this self-paced, book study course, you will read Away from Home: American Indian Boarding School Experiences to deepen your knowledge about and reflect on this era.  The course instructors will offer opportunities for you to reflect on what this knowledge could mean for students in your classrooms. This course will help you find ways to integrate the MT CCSS Reading and Writing Standards and The Essential Understandings Regarding Montana Indians.

This book study course opens May 15, 2017.  To receive 30 renewal units, which you may count towards fulfillment of your twelve hours of personalized professional development, you must complete the course assignments by July 15, 2017.  In this course, you will read the book of study, reflect and respond to the reading through journal entries, get familiar with additional resources on this topic, and link this work to your grade level instruction.  

Specific requirements:   

• Read Away from Home: American Indian Boarding School Experiences 1879 - 2000

• Examine the Language Arts Model Teaching Unit, Sweetgrass Basket, and other supplementary books and resources available

• Reflect and respond to your reading through online journal entries, including course assignments such as the following:

• making connections to the text, comparing key quotes, reacting to photos

• creating a timeline of events

• identifying ways you will incorporate this work into your curriculum for next year

Note:  SWMSS will provide you with a copy of this book.  Instructions for additional resources will be provided on this CourseSite.

After registering for the course, you will be sent a copy of the book used in this book study.  Shortly after, you will receive a link to join the online course through CourseSites.com, from one of the instructors.  After creating your CourseSites account, you will be able to enter the course to begin.  

Course instructors are available to help with any questions along the way.  They will periodically review your work during the course and confirm completion at the end.
