Book Choices
You may choose to read Neither Wolf nor Dog: On Forgotten Roads with an Indian Elder by Kent Nerburn or The Round House by Louise Erdrich. A synopsis of each book is provided below. SWMSS will provide the book for registered participants. All other materials will be provided on this CourseSite.
In Neither Wolf nor Dog, Kent Nerburn attempts to bridge the gap between the world into which he was born and the world of a people he grew to know and love. Nerburn narrates the fascinating toils and truths of a 78-year-old Lakota elder, identified only as Dan. Dan speaks eloquently on the power of silence, the difference between land and property, white peoples' urge to claim an Indian heritage, and the selling of sacred ceremonies. The book takes the reader past myths and stereotypes to the heart of the Native American experience.
Drawn from real-life statistics about radically prompted attacks on reservations in the book The Round House, Louise Erdrich transports readers to the Ojibwe reservation in North Dakota. It is an exquisitely told coming of age story of a boy who seeks justice and understanding in the wake of a terrible crime that upends and forever transforms his family.
