Our Program ...

Below is a partial listing of our scheduled and confirmed presentations. More information will be available in the near future.

San Diego Police Department

While on a countywide crime spree, a male female duo a.k.a. Bonnie and Clyde, shot at pursuing officers multiple times.  At the terminus of the pursuit, Bonnie and Clyde became an armed barricade; negotiations lasted over 12 hours.  This case study will discuss the initial negotiation strategy and how it evolved as the incident dynamics changed.  It will also discuss mistakes made and a legal discussion that arose during the negotiations.  Much of the case study involves video and actual negotiation audio.

Phoenix Police Department

On Christmas Day in 2017, celebrity weight-loss guru Milan Ross spent the morning with his two children singing and making videos portraying a happy, loving family. Milan had high hopes that when his ex-wife arrived to pick up the boys, his recent success and the spirit of the season would spark new hope for a future together.  But disappointment coupled with alcohol would lead to a much different outcome, and less than two hours after the singing stopped, Milan would commit unspeakable acts of violence against his own family. In addition to calls from witnesses reporting the violence, Milan dialed 911 to state that he killed his wife and threatened that if police try to enter his apartment he would kill his kids. A six hour hostage standoff would ensue, with negotiators racing to understand the man and his motives, and tactical units struggling to find advantage in an almost hopeless scenario, all the while Ross holding his children as human shields.

James City County, VA Police Department

This presentation is a case study in which the department handled a shots fired/barricade call which evolved into a hostage situation. The negotiators utilized their skills in order to negotiate with the subject and their hostage via text, eventually evolving into a voice to voice negotiation for an extended period of time.  The presentation will detail several challenges faced and prolonged negotiations through a tense, dynamic hostage situation.

Spotslyvania, VA Sheriff's Office

In July of 2021 Spotsylvania Sheriff’s Office Deputies and Detectives assisted the US Marshals Task Force in locating and arresting a subject wanted through 4 jurisdictions. Once units arrived at the subject’s residence, the subject barricaded himself inside and fired multiple shots at law enforcement. This started what would turn into a nearly 8 hour standoff and negotiation effort with the subject who claimed to have a 6 month old child hostage and multiple explosive devices planted in and around his residence. Multiple agencies and resources utilized, including SWAT, Fire Department, Fire Marshals, EOD, Drone Team, and more...

Layton City Police Department

In September 2021, a suspect was involved in a several-day crime spree that spanned through multiple Utah cities.  The suspect had been committing violent crimes for two days and kept evading police. The suspect was eventually located and lead police on a high speed vehicle chase.  At the conclusion of the pursuit, he fled to a residence in the middle of the night where he held a family hostage at gun point. Over several hours, the suspect assaulted, manipulated, and terrorized the family.  Negotiators were eventually able to establish communication with the hostages and suspect.

This presentation will discuss the outcome of the incident and the unique circumstances that concluded it. It will cover negotiating through text messages and working through a perceived Stockholm syndrome. Lastly, it will discuss the incidents shortcomings, successes and the importance of working together jointly with the tactical team.

This is only but a few of the confirmed presentations for this year's seminar, there is much more in store and we hope you're able to join us for another great year!!!
