Overview:
Intellectual property (e.g., patents, copyrights, trademarks, and trade secrets) is often the most significant, and sometimes the only, assets of a business, particularly those in the technology sector. This program will focus on identifying and protecting a business’ intellectual property, and how to commercialize that property.

Speakers:
William C. Geary III - Nutter, McClennen & Fish
Bill Geary is co-managing partner and a member of the Intellectual Property Department and Life Sciences and Emerging Companies practice groups. He is also a member of the firm's Executive Committee. His practice concentrates in all aspects of patent and trademark law. Bill counsels clients in strategies for the development, protection, and exploitation of patent and trademark rights in the United States and abroad. He has extensive experience in preparing and prosecuting patent applications in a variety of technologies, with emphasis in the fields of medical devices, polymers and advanced materials, and chemicals. He represents start-up as well as established companies, including Johnson & Johnson, various medical device manufacturers, and medical and research institutions, including Massachusetts General Hospital.
Bruce Horwitz, TechRoadMap
Bruce Horwitz, President of TechRoadMap received his doctorate in Optics in 1976 and spent over twenty-five years in R&D and new product development activities, functioning at various times as an individual contributor, program manager, or department manager at Itek Optical Systems and Vice President of Research and Development for MicroE Systems. After leaving MicroE Mr. Horwitz was Director of Optical Technology for AXSUN Technologies before founding TechRoadmap Incorporated in 2000, a company providing Director of Intellectual Property services on an outsource basis. During the period before founding TechRoadmap, Mr. Horwitz worked on various advanced optical systems and concepts, obtaining 8 patents.
Jill S. Murthi - University of Massachusetts Lowell
Jill Murthi, Director of Commercial Ventures and Intellectual Property, joined the University of Massachusetts Lowell in June 2009. She has over twenty years’ experience in technology transfer in university research and teaching hospital environments, as well as having held multiple roles in business development and intellectual property management at several Massachusetts biotechnology companies. Prior to joining UMass Lowell, Jill was Manager of Business Development and Intellectual Property at Elixir Pharmaceuticals, Inc., a biotechnology company located in Cambridge, Massachusetts. She previously held the position of Senior Licensing Manager with the Office of Research Ventures & Licensing at Massachusetts General Hospital, Partners HealthCare System in Boston, Massachusetts, where she focused on strategic collaborations with industry through licensing, sponsored research and new venture agreements. Jill’s experience includes roles in intellectual property management and business development at GPC Biotech, Mitotix and ImmuLogic.

Rory Pheiffer is an associate in the Intellectual Property Department. His practice covers a broad spectrum of intellectual property issues, including domestic and international patent prosecution, patent litigation, patent opinion and clearance matters, domestic and international trademark prosecution and enforcement, and technology licensing matters.
