Comprehension Lesson for Early Readers

This exciting new workshop is designed as a complete comprehension lesson for tutors to incorporate into their sessions with early readers.  Often, we are so focused on fluency that we forget to ask if the child understands the text!  This workshop is geared toward simplifying the concepts of comprehension through practicing vocabulary strategies, question asking, knowledge checks and reflection activities in a tutoring session. By the end of this workshop, you will better understand how to practice vocabulary and comprehension strategies before, during and after a reading to ensure students understand and engage in the texts they read.  

The training is located at SPPS District Headquarters (360 Colborne St, Room F). See the map at the left for more details. Please allow yourself plenty of time to find the building, it can be a bit tricky. Free parking is available in the lot next to the building. Enter the building at the main entrance. Once in the building Room A will be to the left of the reception desk. Signs will be posted to indicate the room.

Light snacks will be provided but please feel free to bring your own food as needed.

Tutor training is open to any volunteer or program staff member working with young people in St. Paul.
