A group class is a dynamic social context in which many aspects of music making can be explored efficiently and enjoyably. In this special workshop, Carey Beth Hockett will present tools and tactics to help teachers get more out of groups. Participants will learn how to make every child feel an integral part of the group, how to involve parents, and how to engage players of different standards. Activities designed around scales and simple folk songs will cover a variety of areas, including:
Violin, viola, and cello teachers should bring instruments and be prepared to play. Teachers of other instruments are encouraged to observe and to participate in the non-instrumental activities, mimicking the role of parents in Suzuki group classes. The activities will help everybody
Teachers who attend all 10 hours may register this Enrichment Course with the Suzuki Association of the Americas.
Come enjoy a great night of dinner and socializing. All SAU teachers are invited.

Carey Beth Hockett is a member of the Suzuki faculty of the Colburn School in Los Angeles and the Director of Corkybird Enterprizes which provides creative resources for music education. She has been actively involved in Suzuki cello in both America and Europe for 40 years and is recognized as a Teacher Trainer by both the SAA and the ESA. Carey taught at the Ithaca Talent Education School from 1975 to 1988 and with the London Suzuki Group from 1988 to 2006. She is well known for her creative work with groups of all sizes and has designed a new course for teachers called Group Class Techniques. Her compositions include Amusements for String Quartet, a collection of short pieces designed to train basic ensemble-playing skills, and Diversions for Cello Ensemble, a series of pieces that include elements of body percussion and cello drumming along with normal playing. She is now serving on the SAA Board of Directors.
Carson Tueller began playing flute when he was 10 and has loved it ever since. He is a strong advocate of music education and loves the Suzuki Method. He has studied with many great teachers, and has had additional instruction from some of the nation's best, including Jim Walker, Leone Buyse, Tadeo Coelho, Amy Porter, and Bonita Boyd. As a teacher, Carson provide ample opportunities for students to perform, learn from others, and have a variety of experiences to promote growth and experience. Teaching is his passion and he gives the very best instruction he can to every student.
Jonathan R. Brubaker is a senior studying Exercise Physiology & Movement Sciences at BYU-Idaho. He currently works as a tutor for students studying Kinesiology and Biomechanics and runs an online personal training business. He is also currently studying to obtain a license in massage therapy. Jonathan has previously worked as a personal trainer and as a physical therapy technician for Hand & Orthopedic Physical Therapy. He has completed internships at Hand & Ortho and Vasa Fitness. He has given presentations relating to back and trunk health at BYU and BYU-Idaho. In his spare time Jonathan enjoys teaching martial arts, drawing, and weight training.
Kristi Spackman began Suzuki piano lessons at age 4. In Jr. High and High School she studied piano for 4.5 years with professors at both Southern Illinois University and Virginia Commonwealth University. In fifth grade she began playing the French Horn, and played in bands through 2007, including the BYU Cougar Marching Band and pep bands. She graduated from BYU in Marriage, Family & Human Development, with coursework in infant and child development.
Kristi began teaching piano in 1997, began her Suzuki teacher training in 2007, and began teaching Suzuki piano in 2009. She apprenticed with master piano teacher trainer Cleo Brimhall from 2008-2013, and has traveled to study with visiting teachers from the Suzuki Talent and Education Research Institute in Matsumoto Japan. Kristi also began teaching guitar with Fun Folk Guitar in 2015.
Kristi began her SECE coursework in 2013 and has completed 90 hours of teacher training. She has two daughters, ages 5 and 8
Jenny Wadsworth has been teaching for 19 years. She has four awesome kids ranging from age 9-17, two cellists and two violinists. She has a strong "music is fun, curiosity and mistakes are how we learn, and connecting with beauty and others enriches our life" philosophy. Her training includes BA in Music from BYU, both long term and short term certification through the Suzuki Association of the Americas as well as more than a thousand professional development master teacher observation hours. Her current musical passion is choral. She just finished her 3rd season with Utah Voices culminating in a performance at Carnegie Hall! She is a new member of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. Her hobbies outside of music include hiking, photography and cooking.
