About the Teaching Practices Workshop Series:
Offered as a collaboration with the Center for Faculty Excellence, we aim to expose UNO and affiliated educators to new educational strategies, including within the high-impact realms of inquiry-based learning, undergraduate research, and inclusive teaching.
Facilitator: Chrissi von Renesse PhD, Department of Mathematics, Westfield State University and Discovering the Art of Mathematics
In this very active session, participants will experience doing a fun and easy mathematical activity (no prerequisites!) in a remote synchronous setting. They will then use this experience to deeply reflect on learning and teaching with inquiry. After the session, from noon to 12:30pm, there will be optional time to grab lunch and talk about teaching with inquiry in different classes and subject areas.
1 hour workshop plus 30-minute optional lunch discussion.
Dr. Christine von Renesse is a passionate teacher, who loves teaching at all levels — from elementary school through College. She uses open inquiry techniques in all her classes, believing that this is the most effective and enjoyable way of learning and teaching. As part of the “Discovering the Art of Mathematics” (DAoM) project, Christine brings her passion for dance, music, and games into her mathematics classes at Westfield State University in Massachusetts, exploring the deeper connections together with her students. Christine is also part of the leadership team of the New England Community for Inquiry-Based Learning (IBL), and also Co-Director of the national COMMIT network (https://www.comathinquiry.org/). Christine has facilitated 50 workshops on inquiry for DAoM, the Academy for IBL, COMMIT, and many other venues.
