How to Spot Research Resources in the Wild: Finding and Collecting What You Need

Wednesday, November 11, 2020 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM CDT

This is an online event. A Zoom link will be sent to you after you RSVP.

Facilitator: Heidi Blackburn, PhD - STEM and Business Librarian
Dr. C.C. and Mabel L. Criss Library

Abstract:

Navigating the jungle of online resources such as library databases, PubMed, Google Scholar and others can be an adventure! You might need to jump right in for assignments or lab research but have no idea how to find what you’re being asked to gather.

  • Where do I find peer-review articles?

  • Are conference proceedings considered scholarly?

  • What’s the difference between a case study and a review article?

  • What is this “Elsevier” my instructor keeps talking about?

  • My faculty member wants me to search “the literature” but how do I know where to start?

Join Dr. Heidi Blackburn for a hands-on presentation as weidentify the characteristics of different academic sources and where you can expect to find them in specific UNO Libraries databases. Tips for conducting searches and collecting literature will be provided. Students are encouraged to follow along on their own devices and to bring questions.
