AIA Lecture: "Landscape Architecture: Our 21st Century Superhero" - 8/12/18

Katya Crawford, Associate Professor of Landscape  Architecture

August 12, 2018 (Sun) 3:00 – 5:00 p.m.

In a world facing rapid urbanization, environmental destruction and social unrest, how can design, large and small, create healthy, beautiful, generative spaces for all? This talk reveals the power of landscape architecture to delight and heal, inspire and transform. Examples of local and international projects will transport the attendees into the magical realm of landscape architecture, giving clarity and depth to a largely underrepresented and misunderstood profession. Katya Crawford will share three local projects from the firms Surroundings Studio, Groundwork Studio and radicle, as well as projects by Field Operations (New York), Latz + Partners (Germany) and Turenscape (China).

Katya Crawford is an Associate Professor in the Landscape Architecture Department at The University of New Mexico’s School of Architecture and Planning and is Past President of The Council of Educators in Landscape Architecture. Katya’s research focuses on the ephemeral landscape and its power to engage and reveal social and environmental systems.  Crawford’s work has been exhibited and published both nationally and internationally. Most recently Crawford and two of her colleagues placed 3rd in the international design competition Hornachuelos, and placed 1st in the ideas competition “What’s Up Paris?.”
