  Keynote Speaker  (9:00 - 10:15 am)

Harvey Webster, Retired Chief Wildlife Officer and Museum Ambassador, Cleveland Museum of Natural History 

“Save the World:  Nature in My Backyard”:  Learn about the pilot program from the Audubon Society of Greater Cleveland and the Shaker Lakes        Garden Club that aims to help homeowners transform their yard into life-sustaining habitats for native flora and fauna. 

Morning Session (10:45 - 11:45 am)

Option A -  Scott Beuerlein, Manager, Botanical Garden Outreach, Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden 

“Making Landscapes that Matter”:  This talk will cover art, evolution, history, food and more with the goal of creating meaningful landscapes that appeal to our human nature and support our health and well-being.  Beuerlein makes the case that green spaces and the plants that create them fulfill basic human needs, not wants. 

Option B -  Judy Semroc, founder of Naturespark 

“Faces of Conservation”:  This unique program illustrates the connection among people, land usage and the creatures that share our world.  Learn how our actions impact the natural history around us – from the use of pesticides and herbicides to land development and gardening techniques.   

Option C - Randy Mitchell, Professor of Biology, University of Akron 

“Bumble Bees of Ohio”:  At least 19 species of bumble bees could once be found in Ohio, but only about 10 are now frequent.  Learn more about what you can do to help some of our most important, charismatic and vulnerable pollinators.  

 

First Afternoon Session (12:30 - 1:30 pm)

Option D - Scott Beuerlein, Manager, Botanical Garden Outreach, Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden 

“Bad Ass Trees for Piss Poor Places”: The trees in this talk are survivors. They laugh at incorrect planting technique, scoff at mulch volcanoes, mock bad pruning cuts, and smirk at poor maintenance practices. Enjoy this romp through trees so ornery they'll resist the worst that is hurled at them and be there to shade your children’s children.  

 Option E - MaryAnn Thesing, Horticulturalist, Holden Forest and Gardens 

 “Designing with Dwarf Conifers”:  Dwarf conifers are low-maintenance, four-season plants that complement any garden design. MaryAnn Thesing will provide tips and tricks for incorporating these charming plants into your own garden through the use of form, color, and texture. 

Option F - Dr. Ann Chanon, OSU Extension Educator, Agriculture and Natural Resources, Lake County 

“Flowers:  Beauty, Biology and Chemistry”:  This program will focus on flower structures and what they can tell us along with how those structures shape pollinator interactions and plant reproduction. We will also look at pigments which give our flowers their color. 

 

 

Second afternoon session (2:00 - 3:00 pm)

Option G - Ryn Clarke, Visual Artist, Photographer, Educator 

“Unleash the Power of Your iPhone in Your Garden!”:  You’ll learn the hidden features of your iPhone that can elevate your imagery and make your garden and landscape photos more engaging.  Ryn will provide an extensive collection of printed handouts for reference. 

Option H - Enrico Bonello, PhD, Professor, Plant Pathology, The Ohio State University 

“Why Do Forest Pathogen and Insect Invaders Kill Our Trees and What Can Be Done?”:  Here in the US, we are regularly faced with invasions of forest environments by pathogens and insect pests that kill our trees. Dr Bonello will explain why this keeps happening and present some thoughts on potential solutions. 

Option I - Joanna Thomas, Sustainable Landscape Designer, Certified Arborist, Master Gardener, Owner, Gardenscapes,  

“Ohio Native Plants”:  Native plants create habitat that is essential for wildlife and essential to sustaining biodiversity and resilient landscapes.  Learn about Ohio native trees, shrubs and perennials that you can plant to help sustain our planet.

Chicken Caesar lunch wrap: Pulled Chicken, Parmesan Caesar Sauce, Cucumbers, Red Onion, Leaf Lettuce, Side of Banana Pepper Rings with Smashed Potato Salad
