ADA Training for Recreation & Supporting Facilities

The 2010 ADA Accessibility Standards have been adopted and for the first time recreation facilities are specifically included. Standards for outdoor developed areas such as trails, campgrounds, picnic and viewing areas and beaches are close to being finalized. This 3-day training course conducted by the National Center on Accessibility will provide an overview of the new accessibility standards while emphasizing how design and construction affect people with disabilities and how people with disabilities function in park facilities.

This course is ideal for planners, designers, facility managers and accessibility coordinators. Session topics will include relevant legislation, rules and regulations as they relate to parks and recreation; characteristics and needs of people with disabilities as they relate to function and usability; program access requirements; and the ADA/ABA accessibility standards, boating and fishing facilities, picnic areas, trails, campgrounds, and beaches.

A field exercise will be conducted outdoors at Montgomery Bell State Park to demonstrate program and physical assessment practices along with considerations for prioritization of physical and programmatic barrier removal. Upon completion of the course participants will be able to recognize barriers to program access; apply the accessibility standards to new construction and altered recreation facilities; and direct project supervision toward compliance with the accessibility standards while benefitting the widest spectrum of park users.
