Although participation is optional, it is strongly recommended that each student participate.  A strong participation by students will make the event more competitive and fun.  Please remember that competition is healthy when approached in the right manner.  This tournament is designed to help students set goals, learn to participate and practice good sportsmanship skills.

 Competition Rules

(1) Kata:  scores will range from 6-10 with judges giving scores based on belt level, age, and complexity of the kata performed.  Both the presentation of the kata and the kata itself are scored as one.  Only Master Form will be judged.  Any other katas / forms will not be scored at the tournament. All belt levels are allowed to compete in this division.

Time Limit:  Each kata routine must be three (3) minutes or less.  The time starts once the competitor enters the competition ring.  Any competitor that goes over the allowed time limit is automatically disqualified.   At the 2 minute 45 second mark of a competitor’s form the time keeper will shout out “FIFTEEN SECONDS”.

(2) Sparring:  No contact to the face.  Light touch to the head guard and body is permitted.  No striking below the belt or at the neck, throat or back.  Points are awarded for well-controlled moves at the face, chest, stomach and ribs.  Each match lasts a full two minutes with total points determining the winner.  Single elimination.  Students are matched by age and belt level.  Two warnings for facial contact or excessive contact is automatic disqualification for the striker.  All fighting participants must wear the completed set of protective equipment (head, hands, foot, mouth and cup for male participants).
