General Information

The karate tournament will take place on Sunday, November 2nd from 12:00pm to 4:00pm at Silver Spring International Middle School in the GYM - located at 313 Wayne Avenue, Silver Spring, MD 20910.  This competition is restricted to only Kaizen Karate students.  Students must be purple belt or higher to compete.  Intermediate & Advanced level students ONLY.  The competition will consist of three areas:

(1) Katas (Master Form)
(2) Sparring
(3) Continuous Sparring

*Students can choose one or all divisions listed above*

Trophies will be awarded for 1st, 2nd, & 3rd place plus ribbons will be awarded to all competitors that compete (only 1 ribbon per competitor).

 ***PRE-REGISTRATION ONLY - STUDENTS CAN NOT REGISTER ON THE DAY OF THE EVENT***

Early registration (until October 12th): $40
Late registration (October 13th – October 26th): $50

*All waiver forms must be completed by parent / guardian at the front desk on the day of the tournament* 

There is no spectator fee.  Friends are welcome to watch.

Although participation is optional, it is strongly recommended that each student participate.  A strong participation by students will make the event more competitive and fun.  Please remember that competition is healthy when approached in the right manner.  This tournament is designed to help students set goals, learn to participate and practice good sportsmanship skills.

Competition Rules

(1) Kata:  scores will range from 6-10 with judges giving scores based on belt level, age, and complexity of the kata performed.  Both the presentation of the kata and the kata itself are scored as one.  Only Master Form will be judged.  Any other katas / forms will not be scored at the tournament. All belt levels are allowed to compete in this division.

(2) Sparring:  No contact to the face.  Light touch to the head guard and body is permitted.  No striking below the belt or at the neck, throat or back.  Points are awarded for well-controlled moves at the face, chest, stomach and ribs.  Each match lasts a full two minutes with total points determining the winner.  Single elimination.  Students are matched by age and belt level.  Two warnings for facial contact or excessive contact is automatic disqualification for the striker.  All fighting participants must wear the completed set of protective equipment (head, hands, foot, mouth and cup for male participants). All belt levels are allowed to compete in this division.

(3) Continuous Sparring:  No contact to the face.  Light touch to the head guard and body is permitted.  No striking below the belt or at the neck, throat or back.  The match will be separated into two 30 second rounds. A point will be awarded at the end of each round.  If there is a tie at the end of 2 rounds then a final round will be fought for 15 seconds to decide a winnder.  Single elimination.  Students are matched by age and belt level.  Two warnings for facial contact or excessive contact is automatic disqualification for the striker.  All fighting participants must wear the completed set of protective equipment (head, hands, foot, mouth and cup for male participants).

Judging: brown, red and black belts are allowed to judge at the tournament.  If you would like to judge please let Coach V know as soon as possible.
