After-School Offering

Social and Emotional Learning

Daily 6:00pm-7:30pm

According to Committee for Children, social-emotional learning (SEL) is the process of developing the self-awareness, self-control, and interpersonal skills that are vital for school, work, and life success.  People with strong social-emotional skills are better able to cope with everyday challenges and benefit academically, professionally, and socially. From effective problem-solving to self-discipline, from impulse control to emotion management and more, SEL provides a foundation for positive, long-term effects on kids, adults, and communities.

After-school programming will provide an opportunity for students to drop in, socialize with Youth Leaders and their peers and discuss topics supporting SEL.

There will be social hours and activities made available daily.  We are currently gathering student interest.

After-School Tutoring and Homework Help

Daily 3:00pm-4:00pm

The after-school program is working in collaboration with the academic day to provide tutoring, homework help, and support with virtual platforms for students who may need assistance.  We will be receiving teacher feedback so if you think your student could benefit from this, please select tutoring from the sign-up page.  More info to come.

Fitness Club

Mondays 4:00pm

Tired of sitting?  Not moving much with the quarantine?  Let us help you get your energy level up and your body feeling better!!  We will provide you with a video once a week with an at-home workout that we will help you modify for your personal needs.  We will show you how to perform the movements and discuss how you can use items from home to help you reach your goals.  We will also meet with you once a week to complete the workout together.  We will help you work on your form and stay safe while you get stronger!

International Club

Tuesday 4:00pm

International Club will be full of information and interviews.  You will learn about different countries from around the world as you listen to people from those places talk about their home countries.  There are many different places that we'll learn about.  Some countries that will be studied might include India, Ireland, Jamaica, the Philippines, Australia and of course, there are more.  We'll watch interviews and discuss the country of topic for the day.  The students will learn about the food they eat, what types of transportation they use to get around, what landmarks visitors find interesting, and the languages that are spoken there!  We might even learn to say a phrase or two in that language!

Here is one example where Sara and I talk about Ireland: https://youtu.be/hhQQa__2v6k

Thank you and I hope you're interested in joining the International Club in the Autumn of 2020!

Space Science Mentorship (8th-12th grade)

Tuesday at 4:00pm

****Deadline to register is September 14th****

Are you interested in outer space? Do you want to become involved in real astronomy research? Do you want to learn about college life from a University mentor? Are you excited about the prospect of learning from space scientists? Then join The Ohio State University (OSU) / Ohio State School for the Blind (OSSB) Space Science Mentorship Program!

This new completely virtual after-school program, is a collaboration between The Ohio State University and the Ohio State School for the Blind. We connect OSU mentors with BVI students who are interested in astronomy and space science. The mentors are undergraduate and graduate student volunteers from the OSU Department of Astronomy, Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, and the Department of Physics. They will be paired with BVI students in grades 8 through 12 from across the United States to work on space science projects and provide guidance on college life.

As the program’s main activity, mentors and their students will participate in a citizen science project, allowing the students to contribute to real scientific research! The program will use sonified data so that the students can analyze it entirely through sound. Mentors and students will also attend astronomy lectures given by OSU faculty and post-docs and participate in weekly meetings with their mentor and with the entire program cohort.

If you have any questions, please contact Program Coordinator Anna Voelker at voelker.30@osu.edu.

Pays It Forward (9th-12th grade)

Wednesdays 4:00pm

PAYS It Forward will focus on volunteerism and the importance of community service to students in grades 9th-12th.  This club will meet once a week, and students will perform a quick impact service activity from their homes.  Activities will focus on literacy and include the following:  writing letters, following recipes, reading directions to create craft projects, and more.  As a group, we will have round table each week to learn and discuss the organizations with which we are volunteering, and students will be responsible for completing their activities on their own, with guided help.  Moreover, students will earn a certificate with their hours of completion at the end of the program.

3-D Model Club

Wednesdays 5:00pm

3-D model club will engage and introduce students on how to 3D print
Students will explore different types of printers, view different types of 3D programs like Thingiverse and MiniFactory.  Students will then select 3D models they want to do when they return to school and help write summaries of the old models for display.

Students will also be able to select models they want to print and use Zoom, Google, FaceTime or whatever tech the student has to tell me what steps to take to print their models. Instuctors will have the 3D Pritners on-site with themselves.  The students can then discuss steps with the instructors on how to use the machines and print their ideas.

Spanish Club

Thursdays 4:00pm

¡Camina!

Are you stuck at home and unable to explore these days? Let’s go to Spain! ¡Camina! will allow participants in grades 6-12 to virtually complete the Camina de Santiago in Spain. Participants will work as a team to cover the 480-mile trail from France to Spain. Any creative movement helps advance the team: walking, running, and even yoga can help us reach our goal! We will receive virtual postcards as we advance to places along the trail and learn about Spanish culture as we complete our miles.  Participants will receive a medal once the team has arrived! ¡Camina y corre!

Explorers Club

Thursday 4:00pm-5:30pm

OSSB Explorers is a student-interest driven group so the weekly themes and subjects may vary. You can count on engaging in some sort of nature/science-based experiment, game, or virtual challenge each week. Our first meeting will set the agenda for the upcoming weeks such as what we explore and what we do. After that, it's all go! We support and challenge ourselves to push to our own limits. If you like the weird, gross, thrilling stuff of nature, science and the outdoors - We want you with us!

Time commitment for student, as well as the parent, is about 2 hrs a week. There may be times when the challenge calls for parent help (i.e. maybe something like making slime etc.). A typical virtual club week will be: An email (usually on Friday) outlining the theme and activity challenge for next Thursday's Virtual Explorers Meeting. Most times it will be a call to focus some thought and attention to an aspect of the natural world in addition to activities that can be completed indoors as well as outdoors. Students are not required to do anything, but if they wish, they can accept the challenge and record their results and accomplishments to share with the group.
