OMA Assistant Workshop - Portland 2015

Come join us as we explore what it means to be a Montessori Assistant!

Topics include the history of Montessori education, what is Montessori and how does it work, child development ages 0-12 and beyond, roles and duties of the Assistant, observation and how to intervene, practical everyday activities, positive guidance techniques and communication with the Guide.

This workshop will be led by experienced gudies and administrators, Mercedes Castle (Infant/Toddler level),  Tammy Ulrich (Primary level), and Amy Eshelby (Elementary level).

Mercedes Castle is the co-founder of The Portland Montessori Collaborative and also the Pedagogical Director and Music Teacher at the school.  She earned a B.A. in Biology from the University of California at Santa Cruz and has as an Infant and Toddler Montessori Teaching Credential from the American Montessori Society. Mercedes is an Oregon Registry Master Trainer.  In 2014, Mercedes co-founded Heart and Hand Montessori Teacher Education Program (a MACTE applicant in good standing) to bring high quality Montessori teacher training based on a mentorship model and relevant professional development to Oregon professionals who work with infants and toddlers.

Amy Eshelby has been working in Montessori Elementary programs since 1998.  This fall will be her 15th year in the classroom as a Guide and she is currently working at Childpeace Montessori in Portland, OR.  She served on the OMA Board from 2002-2004 and is currently on the Board of Directors at Montessori Northwest.  Her strongest desire and passion is to help the Montessori Movement – mentoring new teachers, helping as a speaker at schools, sharing camaraderie with colleagues, trying to hone ‘best practices’ in the classroom, and educating parents.

Tamara Ulrich first came to Montessori at the age of 2 ½.  As an adult, Tammy has been involved in Montessori education for over 30 years.  She is the Founder and past Administrator of Child’s View Montessori in SW Portland.  Tammy is AMI trained and an Oregon Registry Master trainer, teaching various Early Childhood classes and workshops.  She is also an AMS Field Consultant and most recently serves as a MACTE verification team member. She is a past president of OMA, and the mother of 4 amazing, now adult, kids.
