OMA Assistant Workshop - Portland 2014

Come join us as we explore what it means to be a Montessori Assistant!

Topics include the history of Montessori education, what is Montessori and how does it work, child development ages 0-12 and beyond, roles and duties of the Assistant, observation and how to intervene, practical everyday activities, positive guidance techniques and communication with the Guide.

This workshop will be led by experienced gudies and administrators, Kari Wax (Infant/Toddler level),  Jeanne VanDeReit (Primary level), and Judi Simmons (Elementary level).

Kari Wax is the owner and administrator of Tiny Revolution Montessori in NE Portland.  Prior to moving to Oregon, she founded the first Infant/Toddler Montessori classroom in the Phoenix, AZ area.  She currently serves on the OMA Board and is co-chair of OMA's Oregon Montessori Advocacy Partnership.

Jeanne VanDeRiet became interested in Montessori after working for several years with emotionally disturbed children and their families.  During her beginning years as a Guide she was fortunate to have worked in Corvallis with great mentors, followed by the Virgin Islands, which gave her a love of diversity and the tropics.  She also worked eleven years at Providence (now The Portland Montessori School), which gave her an opportunity to be an On-Call Guide, an Assistant, a Guide and an Administrator.  Jeanne currently serves on the OMA Board.

Judi Simmons recently retired after 35 years of teaching.  She has taken both AMS and AMI trainings and is the founder of Little Oak Montessori in While Salmon, WA.  Over the course of her career she has worked at Northwest Montessori in Seattle, the Franciscan Montessori Earth School in Portland, and Cascadia Montessori in Vacouver, WA.  She loves to travel and has a great collection of children's books for the Elementary-aged child.  Judi currently serves on the OMA Board.
