Panel Discussion and Presentation:  Alternate Designations – Can They Add Value to Your Practice?

Meeting Description 

Student Forum Meetings are intended for those students at UCSC-Extension who are enrolled in the Personal Financial Planning Program and for members of the Financial Planning Association (any chapter).  These meetings are not open to the public. 

For students on the path to earning their CFP(r) designation, casual research turns up other professional designations.  The question many students and newer professionals ask is this:  how do I evaluate the myriad number of designations?  Which can truly prepare me to provide better support to my clients, and which are just another TLA (three letter acronym) to add to my business card and website?   Which should I pursue? 

We have invited three of our current instructors, some of whom hold additional designations, to discuss their observations on this topic, as well as their personal experience with their specific designation(s) held.  In addition, one of the Student Forum Team members has researched some of the more popular designations, and the findings will be presented, including the educational and testing requirements. 

This will be a hybrid session, part panel and part presentation.  We expect this event to be dynamic, with the audience asking lots of questions.  We hope to see you there.

Panelists Biographies

Panelists will be Russ Blahekta, DBA, CFP®, Sadie Pourfathi QPA, ERPA, and  Renée M. Snow, Ph.D., CFP®, EA.

Russell E. Blahetka, D.B.A., CFP®  is the founder and Managing Director of Vestnomics Wealth Management, LLC. Dr. Blahetka has been a financial advisor since 2002. Previous to this he worked as an international consultant and trainer in the area of data communications and networking. He is an instructor at the UC Santa Cruz Extension where he teaches in the CFP® and CPA programs. He is a current member and past chair of the Academy of Finance Advisory Board at Independence High School in San Jose, CA.

Dr. Renée Snow has worked as a Certified Financial Planner® for the past 20 years and has combined technical expertise with psychology and philosophy in service to her clients. She earned a M.S. in Accountancy and worked 8 years for a large regional CPA firm. Today, Dr. Snow manages her own firm and specializes in tax planning, asset management, and the psychological aspects of wealth management.  Dr. Snow is an associate professor at Sofia University, formerly the Institute of Transpersonal Psychology, where she teaches Transpersonal Finance, Quantitative Research, and Mixed Methods Research. She is also Chair of the Personal Financial Planning Program at the University of California Santa Cruz Extension and teaches the Practicum course.
