This annual event aims to introduce young inner city youth to the concept of medicine early on over a competitive game of basketball.  This program is focused on 6th - 9th grade boys underrepresented in medicine.

100 Hearts CPR/FIrst Aid/STOP THE BLEED

This was our very first initiative of self empowerment for our students.  It has grown to a powerful community of students who are Red Cross Certified Instructors that teach Chicago area youth how to SAVE A LIFE - DON'T TAKE ONE!  Our band of over student instructors have taught and certified over 1000 students and climbing!

WELCOME TO THE ROARING 20'S AND OUR YEAR OF PERFECT VISION!

I AM ABEL FOUNDATION would like to propose partnerships that target to assist socioeconomically disadvantaged Chicago area youth achieve careers in medicine and allow you to share the wonderful spirit of generosity with the community at large.

I AM ABEL FOUNDATION, is a 501c3 charitable organization I founded following the murder of my young cousin then paralysis of my even younger cousin due to south side gun violence all in the same year. I determined that I had to do more than just speak on the problems in Chicago but had to become an agent of change. I founded I AM ABEL FOUNDATION to engage untapped talent amongst Chicago’s inner-city youth interested in careers in medicine and to empower THEM to become doctors as healers that are prepared to change the narrative in their communities.

Our foundation started as initiative of self empowerment with our students learning CPR/FIrst Aid and STOP THE BLEED as a way to heal themselves. As instructors, our students would then teach their peers throughout the city in a program that has taught and certified 1000+ students.  What soon developed, however, was a community based physician mentoring pipeline program that would partner with major academic and community medical centers citywide in a shared mission to reduce inequities in healthcare and in medical education for vulnerable populations and students underrepresented in medicine.

Though only in our 5th year, we have developed a unique community based physician mentoring pipeline program for students in high school, college and post-baccalaureate years with a proven track record.  Our pre-clinical sessions are held at Northwestern Memorial Hospital and are facilitated by some of Chicago's finest doctors and researchers.  Our students our learning the language of medicine early on while building both skills and confidence.  With a wide array of learning levels, our students are participating in exciting curriculua like Gastroenterology, Cardiology and more.  We are seeing our older students gain admission into medical school while our younger students are celebrating even greater success in math and science while navigating the pipeline.

Each of our students participate in an intense pre-health and STEM curriculum that is preparing them to be our future researchers, innovators, advocates and physicians.  We also connect each student one to one with their own physician and medical school student mentors.  We provide them support in a pipeline program that follows them from their first pinning ceremony until the day they dawn their short white coat. We have a powerful mentoring community and our students are saturated with affirmations that further empower them to believe in themselves and their goal to become physicians as healers.

Our goal, through our highly impactful programming is to raise up our next generation of healthcare heroes who will become agents of change in their own communities through the platform of medicine. We believe and teach our mentees that medicine and society are inextricably tied. There is no pill that can take away the pain of the voiceless so community leadership as well as humanitarian service both locally and abroad is woven through our pre-health programming and is an expectation for our mentees.  Your sponsorship support, for a period of one year, will help us continue to build and support these amazing students.

The most challenging barrier for our inner-city children is having visible role models.  You must SEE IT TO BE IT!  Therefore mentoring is the cornerstone of our programming.  Students also lack adequate academic support in a profession that requires mastery of science and mathematics. Many of our students are from poorly resourced inner-city schools and were it not for our interventions would not be reaching such impressive benchmarks. We have now seen our 1st group of medical school matriculants and couldn't be more proud!

This year we are specifically looking to fund our Academic and STEM and MCAT Support Program.  We are also piloting a CARS (Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills) Program that will target students beginning their first year of college.  We believe that if students can improve their critical reading and analysis skills, they can master the MCAT exam.

Your support will help provide the relief and support our students require to succeed. Our goal is to help our mentees overcome common barriers and get the one thing they have often lacked – opportunity.  Please consider becoming a Corporate Sponsor, An Exhibitor or both for our upcoming signature events.
