About New Jersey Safe Routes to School
New Jersey’s Safe Routes to School program is part of a nationwide effort to make walking and bicycling to school safer and more accessible for children, and to increase the number of school children (K-8) who choose to walk or bike to school. The SRTS program is designed to enhance the well-being and health of school children, while easing traffic congestion near schools and improving air quality.
The New Jersey of Department of Transportation has partnered with the Greater Mercer TMA to administer a new statewide education and encouragement program using Safe Routes to School Federal SAFETEA-LU funds. The goal of the program is to educate and encourage more children to walk and bicycle to school.
The goal of New Jersey's Safe Routes to School Program is to assist New Jersey communities in developing and implementing projects and programs that encourage walking and bicycling to school while enhancing the safety of these trips.
