The Multidisciplinary Assessment of Technology Centre for Healthcare (MATCH) is a well-established research collaboration between four leading UK universities (Birmingham, Brunel, Nottingham and Ulster) which is funded by the UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) and partner subscriptions.
MATCH aims to transform the medical device sector by making available methods and tools that cut the time and cost from concept to continuous improvement in the market. MATCH seeks to support device users, the medical device industry, regulators, reimbursement agencies and healthcare providers such as the National Health Service (NHS) in the UK.
As part of a widening international outreach programme, MATCH is partnering with the Massachusetts Medical Device Development Center (M2D2) at the University of Massachusetts Lowell to provide two workshops in key areas where the MATCH research has developed tools and methods to support business decisions in the medical device sector.
Participants in the MATCH-M2D2 International workshops will have the opportunity to see how the MATCH Open Business Tool can allow medical device companies to gain a better understanding of their approach to innovation and how an early stage health economic evaluation methodology can assist with critical aspects of business decision making.

MATCH has developed an Open Business Model Tool that enables companies and organizations to map their current business activities. The model is based on current published theory and practice in the development of open business models. By undertaking such an exercise, the business focus of a company and the associated opportunities they have to can be determined. In a competitive and challenging business climate, focus is crucial. It is the quality and appropriateness of the business focus of a company that will determine future innovation strategies – that are increasingly important in the context of growth.

MATCH has developed a relatively simple tool that can be used to assess the commercial potential of medical devices and which can be applied at the very early stages of development to assist with deciding whether or not to pursue the idea. With the aid of some theoretical development, it can also be extended for application at the stage when the product is about to be placed on the market and can also be used when making development decisions, in that the approach accounts for uncertainty that can help to decide when to invest further in a product. Although not all forms of risk are covered by this theory, it does link the uncertainty a business carries forward to the strength of the statistics from clinical and other trials that the product may have undergone.
