Ethics: An Anti-Oppressive Stance

The National Association of Social Workers recently updated its Ethical Standards to include a call to action for increased critical self-reflection and cultural humility, and against racism, oppression, discrimination, and inequities. These terms and concepts are not new. However, inequities and disparities continue to devastate the lives of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) and LGBTQ+ children, families, and communities. Positive sustainable change will not occur unless we as mental wellness professionals take intentional actions to adopt anti-oppressive and anti-racist standards not only as something that we do at work, but who we are in our everyday lives.

As a result of participating in this session, participants will:

  • Increase their awareness of critical self-reflection as a prerequisite for fostering equity, justice, and positive outcomes for children and their families.
  • Identify their organization on the cultural competence continuum, and share strategies for achieving cultural humility and cultural proficiency.
  • Distinguish the difference between non-racist and anti-racist practices.
  • Recognize the impact of power and privilege on the outcomes of children and families.
  • Apply the PAUSE Model when making decisions that impact children, families, and communities.
  • Identify a buddy to hold them accountable to equity and justice practices and living.
