Hugh O. Nash Jr., PE, FIEEE, FASHE, is an independent consulting electrical engineer in Nashville who specializes in health care facilities and standby and emergency power systems for hospitals and data centers. Licensed to practice electrical engineering in more than 30 states, Mr. Nash is past chair of the IEEE Power Systems Design Subcommittee and the Power Systems Engineering Committee and has been chair of the IEEE White Book Working Group (Recommended Practice for Electric Systems in Health Care Facilities) since 1979 - producing three Editions. He contributed to the IEEE Gray Book (Recommended Practice for Electric Power Systems in Commercial Buildings) and the IEEE Emerald Book (Recommended Practice for Powering and Grounding Sensitive Electronic Equipment). He has published more than 50 technical papers and has received the IEEE Standards Medallion, the IEEE Centennial Medal, and seven IEEE Prize Paper awards. In 1997 the author was named Fellow in the IEEE. He is a member of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 70, 99, and 110/111 committees and past chair of the NFPA 99 Technical Committee on Electrical Systems. He has served on the National Electrical Code Committee for 33 years. Mr. Nash has contributed to numerous editions of the NFPA Health Care Facilities Handbook and authored two editions of the ASHE Handbook on Electrical Systems (2004, 2014). The author has published many ASHE articles and papers and served on several ASHE committees, including the inaugural Construction, Planning and Design Conference Committee. For these and other contributions he as named Fellow in ASHE. For his service to NFPA, the author received the NFPA Committee Service Aware and is a member of the NEC 25-Year Club. He served on the Health Guidelines Revision Committee for 20 years and recently stepped down from the Board of the Facility Guildelines Institute after 10 years of service. He has written and lectured for ASHE, IEEE, NFPA, the American Consulting Engineers Council, the Construction Specifications Institute, the Design and Construction Quality Institue and other professional societies.
