 "Philanthropy in Diverse Communities"

Presented by:  Michelle Cook, Silvia Ramos, Larry F. Weston

Talk Summary:   This forum will explore ways to engage diverse communities in philanthropic giving.  Learn from our guest panel about initiatives in the community that have successfully engaged largely unrepresented members of our community.  Takeaways will include steps that your organization can use to develop stronger relationships with diverse communities.

Speaker Bios: Michelle M. Cook      Ms. Cook was named Vice Chancellor of University Advancement at Winston Salem State University on July 1, 2008.  Prior to her appointment as Vice Chancellor, she served as executive director of the Winston Salem State University Foundation.  Ms. Cook, who continues her role as executive director of WSSU's Foundation, has more than 25 years of experience working in areas of fund development, institutional advancement and training.  From 1999 to 2003, Ms. Cook operated her own consulting firm, By the Book Training and Development, serving as a consultant to not-for-profit agencies and faith-based organizations in the areas of fundraising and organizational management.  She serves on the board of The Marshall B. Bass Children's Fund, St. Peter's Centers for Comprehensive Services and the New Winston Museum.  She is founder of the Women's Fund of Winston Salem and currently serves on the Fund's Advisory Council.

Silvia Ramos      Ms. Ramos currently serves as the EEO/AA & Diversity Officer at Winston Salem State University.  As chief diversity officer, she is responsible for interpreting and analyzing policies and procedures related to equal employment opportunity and affirmative action; developing transformative diversity education programs; enhancing diversity in the curriculum and co-curriculum; and promoting inclusive excellence throughout the campus and surrounding community.  Prior to joining WSSU, Ms. Ramos served as the associate director for diversity education at Virginia Tech.  Her community service commitments have ranged from working with women's shelters to volunteering as an interpreter for community clinics, and leading communities in humanitarian support efforts.  Ms. Ramos received her undergraduate degree from Florida Gulf Coast University, and her M.S. in Counseling and Human Development from Radford University.

Larry F. Weston    Mr. Weston is the owner and principal of Weston Consulting, a management consulting business based in Winston Salem, NC.  He has served as an adjunct professor of Not-for-Profit Management at Salem College in Winston Salem since 2007, drawing upon his experience as a nonprofit professional and volunteer in numerous capacities over the past forty years.  Mr. Weston has been active in the community development and organizational development field as a manager, trainer, program developer, project manager, and management consultant for community-based organizations.  His professional experience comes from service in both the public and private sectors.  He holds a Bachelor of Urban Planning degree from the University of the District of Columbia and a Master of Business Administration degree from the Babcock Graduate School of Business at Wake Forest University.

Heading West from Greensboro: I -40 alternate (new 40). Take Hanes Mall Boulevard exit. Turn right at light. Go to Silas Creek Parkway and turn right and stay in far right Lane. Exit Bolton Street and turn right. Bolton turns into Burke Mill Road. About ½ mile once you are on Bolton/BurkeMill you take a right onto Hospice Lane. You will enter campus and The Williams Education & Counseling Center is the building on the far left with a sculpture of children playing. A map is attached of the campus and where to go.        

Heading East from Statesville: Business 40 to Silas Creek Parkway. Exit right onto Silas Creek Parkway. You
will pass Forsyth Medical Center, Hanes Mall and Toys R Us. Stay right and exit Bolton Street and turn right. Bolton turns into Burke Mill Road. About ½ mile once you are on Bolton/BurkeMill you take a right onto Hospice Lane.
