July 29, 2014 AFP NC Triad Chapter Meeting

"Ethics in Fundraising"

Presented by:  Michelle Speas, CFRE

Topic Description:  As donors get increasingly cautious and scrutinizing of organizations, we are being examined through the public microscope with a great deal of skepticism.  This session will candidly discuss some of the ethical issues that many of us have dealt with.  It will answer some of the most common questions and misconceptions.  Michelle Speas, CFRE, will share astonishing real life stories that are guaranteed to challenge your thinking and give you vitally important tools to avoid similar ethical nightmares.  The AFP Code of Ethical Principles and Standards of Professional Practice has been identified as the most significant benefit of membership in AFP!  In fact, one might say that we and our organization "live or die" by this code.

Speaker Bio:  Michelle has worked for nonprofit organizations in the United States, Japan and Africa, including living two years overseas in Japan.  She has over 20 years of experience in philanthropic service with 16 years in the fundraising profession.  She has also served on over a dozen Triad nonprofit boards including:  Smart Start, Family Services, Second Harvest Food Bank, Twin City Stage, and United Way.

She graduated cum laude from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, magna cum laude with a M.A. from the University of Mississippi at Oxford.  She is a graduate of Duke University's Nonprofit Management program and the international Leadership Development Program at the Center for Creative Leadership.

Michelle is currently serving as the Chief Development Officer for Family Services, one of the Triad's largest nonprofit agencies.  She is an Adjunct Professor at Salem College and High Point University specializing in nonprofit management and leadership development.  Michelle has also taught in the graduate program at UNC School of the Arts.
