U.S. Senator Robert Portman to speak at Akron Press Club April 18

U.S. Senator Robert Portman, a Republican who is running for re-election in November, will speak at the Akron Press Club on Monday, April 18. Lunch will begin at a special time of 11:15 a.m. and the program will follow. There will be the opportunity for questions.

This event is co-sponsored with The University of Akron’s Ray C. Bliss Institute of Applied Politics and No Labels of Akron.

Portman was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2010. This fall he will face the winner of the March 15 Democratic primary.

Portman worked for both Bush administrations. He was associate counsel to President George H.W. Bush and deputy assistant and director of the Office of Legislative Affairs. Under President George W. Bush, Portman was U.S. Trade Representative and Director of the Office of Management and Budget.

Portman also served in the U.S. House, representing the eastern half of Greater Cincinnati and adjoining counties along the Ohio River for six consecutive terms.

Portman is from Cincinnati, where he graduated from Cincinnati County Day School. He received his bachelor of arts from Dartmouth College in New Hampshire and a juris doctorate from the University of Michigan School of Law in Ann Arbor.

Portman and his brother and sister own the Golden Lamb Inn, Ohio’s oldest continually operating restaurant and inn. He and his wife, Jane, have three children.

The Akron Press Club was founded in 1971 to promote a free press and serve local journalists and public relations professionals. The group has a rich heritage of offering newsmakers a forum to discuss issues of the day at Press Club luncheons and speaking events that are open to the public. The club also funds scholarships for journalists and public relations students and sponsors annual fundraising and community outreach events.
